At 601 East St. Victor Street stands the beautifully restored home of Reverend James A. Herod, remembered as the father of African-American education in Abbeville.
Vermilion Venue Co. is honored to steward this historic property and carry its legacy forward as a place where the community gathers.
The Father of African-American Education in Abbeville.
Born in 1860 and sent to Louisiana as a young missionary and teacher, Reverend James A. Herod devoted his life to education at a time when much of Abbeville's Black community had been denied it. Generations were taught to read, write, and sign their own names because of his work.
His former home, restored by The Nehemiah Projects of Acadiana, preserves that story, with artifacts from Abbeville's history displayed throughout.
A Deck Built for Hosting.
Today the house begins a new chapter as an intimate event venue in the heart of historic Abbeville.
At its center is a spacious outdoor back deck of roughly 1,200 to 1,400 square feet, designed and built for hosting, where guests gather in the open air, steps from the story the house preserves.
